Today, I want to shed light on a fundamental truth, that is very important in a world where AI is becoming more and more important: #marketing goes far beyond pretty pictures and lead generation.
In this blog post, we explore the essence of Marketing is Art, as an a powerful form of #communication and how it holds the key to unlocking success and overcoming the challenges faced by modern companies. So, let us embark on this insightful journey together!
The Art of Communication
“I need a demand gen campaign to get more impressions and clicks! Numbers show my customer needs xyz! My SEM keywords should be broad match to get a maximum of traffic to my website!”
That does not show what marketing is about: at its core, marketing is the art of communication. It involves conveying messages, ideas, and values to the target audience. Beyond the visuals and catchy slogans, effective marketing builds connections and cultivates relationships with customers, prospects, and stakeholders.
Just like any conversation, it requires active listening, understanding, and responding in a way that resonates with the intended recipients.
My experience: Numbers don’t talk and you don’t get the real needs and roadblocks of a customer. I always love to be at the customer site, customer events and conventions, you get so much more out of it than just looking at numbers and researches. Go out and TALK to customers!
Understanding the Audience
We all had that experience: a fancy marketing agency with fancy clothes and ripped jeans in a meeting room. They try to sell a shiny full service package because they are a full service marketing agency. They are talking like some extraterrestrials from Mars. Do they understand what you are looking for? Do they even care?
Successful marketing begins with a deep understanding of the #targetaudience audience. Who are they? What are their needs, desires, and pain points? What is the job to be done?
By comprehending their motivations, fears, and aspirations, marketers can tailor their messages to evoke emotions, address concerns, and offer meaningful solutions.
This level of understanding enables marketers to communicate in a manner that truly connects with the audience, fostering trust and loyalty.
My experience: Our audiences are humans, even in B2B and big companies you deal with humans. Humans don’t act rational, they have feelings, moods, preferences, experiences – they act emotional. So before making any assumptions, understand the audience and guess what? You need to TALK to them – again!
Clear and Consistent Messaging
“My product is best in class and can overachieve all benchmarks, it is top of mind of all CEO´s and guides the path to the future” – great product, right? But how does it solve my needs?
„Speak like a person”, that was said by a CEO of a former company. Use language, a “normal” person understands, not company “slang”.
Communication without clarity is like a ship lost at sea. Effective marketing demands clear, concise, and consistent #messaging across all channels and touchpoints. A brand’s message should reflect its values, unique selling proposition, and the benefits it brings to customers. Consistency ensures that every interaction reinforces the brand’s identity and value proposition, reinforcing the trust and familiarity customers seek.
My experience: Always take a step back, when you receive some fancy new slogan, copy, campaign and ask yourself: Would my customer understand this? How would it HELP a customer and would I be able to SELL this product to a customer with this slogan, copy or campaign?
Building Emotional Connections
In some companies marketers are trapped in an ivory tower without customer contact, have never spoken to a customer, but know exactly what are the pain points and how to create successful messaging. There might be a risk of AI taking these jobs, because that is what AI does, learn from the web and draw conclusions.
Humans are emotional beings, and marketing people have the power to tap into those emotions. Great marketers understand that connecting on an emotional level creates long-lasting impressions. By crafting narratives that resonate with the audience’s emotions, marketers can inspire, motivate, and even incite change. Emotional connections foster brand loyalty, encourage advocacy, and result in an enduring customer relationship.
This is one of our biggest human advantages over AI.
My experience: This is very simple, the best way to build connections is at the bar after an event or a business dinner, this is when people talk to you and tell you the truth, so go and have a drink – cheers!
Adapting to the Changing Landscape
“We have a new launch campaign every year, it always was successful, our customers expect this, we need it, there is no other way to sell our new release! ”
The modern business landscape is constantly evolving, and marketing must adapt accordingly. With the rise of digital platforms, social media, AI and data analytics, communication channels have multiplied, making it vital for marketers to stay informed and embrace new technologies and strategies.
Effective communication today involves leveraging customer data to personalize messages, adopting omni-channel approaches, and staying relevant in an ever-changing world.
My experience: in the last 25 years marketing changed like nothing else, it is exciting to see the development of technology, digital platforms, social media and AI. We NEED to keep learning and innovating, otherwise we just f a d e a w a y .
Conclusion, Marketing is Art
For all my dear marketing colleagues out there: be more than just someone who creates pretty pictures and generates leads. Marketing is an art of effective communication.
To succeed in the modern business landscape, companies must recognize the power of communication in building relationships, fostering emotional connections, and overcoming challenges.
By understanding their audience, crafting clear and consistent messages, and adapting to the changing times, companies can harness the full potential of marketing to propel their growth and triumph over adversity. Overall Marketing is an Art, don´t forget. Reach out if you want to talk
Never stop being a human with emotions, never stop talking to people and never stop innovating!
